Retford Half Marathon
Add my race review
The Retford half marathon is organised by Retford Athletic Club - a low key, friendly race with a 700 runner limit. With a new start and finish, and a number of small changes to the route, new course records were set at the 2014 event but slightly new course There are a couple of course records that havn't been broken in a few years - maybe you could be the chap or gal do it! Andrew Akhed holds the male record with a time of 1hr 8 mins and 8 secs with speedy Helen Cawthorne having bragging rights to the female course record of 1 hr 21 secs dead. to beat the times set by Tom Straw who now holds the male record with 1hr 11m 23secs and Caroline Wheelhouse who set the female course record of 1hr 29m 02secs.
The venue for the race is Retford Oaks Academy which offers lots of great facilities for runners including indoor registration, showers, bag store, cycle store, waiting areas and hot and cold food and drink. The race is also chip timed.
The new course offers plenty of PB potential, with an almost completely flat first 5 miles from the start at Retford Oaks Academy on Babworth Road heading out of Retford along North Road towards Barnby Moor. A small hill from Barnby Moor than flattens again for approximately a mile, before a left turn onto Billy Button lane with some winding turns before bringing the runners onto Blyth Road where they turn right towards Blyth for approx a mile before doubling back towards Barnby Moor.
From this point the course is mostly downhill back to Barnby Moor (9mile point), before the runners head right to join a long undulating country road (Old London Road) heading back out to the main Worksop road (11 mile point) where they turn left. A steady downhill slope takes the runners to a short sharp hill at 12.5 miles before heading back to the finish at Retford Oaks.
